How to connect a domain to your hosting (without downtime)
This is a practical checklist. Exact screens may vary by provider, but the process is the same: point DNS to your hosting, then verify it’s working before you finalize changes.
Before you start
- You need access to your domain’s DNS settings (where your domain is registered).
- You need the DNS targets from your hosting (nameservers or A/CNAME records).
- If you’re moving an existing site, plan a low-traffic window.
Option A: change nameservers (simplest)
- In your domain DNS manager, find Nameservers.
- Switch to Custom nameservers.
- Enter the nameservers provided by your hosting account.
- Save, then wait for DNS propagation (can be minutes to 24 hours).
Option B: update DNS records (more control)
- Keep your current nameservers.
- Update the A record for @ (root domain) to your hosting IP.
- Update the CNAME for www to point to your root domain (or your host’s target).
- Verify the site loads from the new hosting before reducing TTL / finalizing.
After you connect DNS
- Ensure SSL is active (HTTPS works).
- Check the homepage + a couple internal pages.
- Confirm email (if your domain email is hosted elsewhere, keep its MX records).
